Commemorating Earth Day & World Water Day: A Call to Protect What Sustains Us
Leaders of Change Initiatives on Community Development (L.C.I.C.D) was founded by Environmental Health and Safety practitioners with a shared vision: to use their skills to build safer, healthier, and more sustainable communities. From the beginning, environmental advocacy has not just been part of the organization’s work—it has been part of its identity.
Among the global environmental observances, Earth Day (April 22) holds a particularly special place within the organization. Over the years, it has become a meaningful tradition—an intentional moment of reflection, action, and renewed commitment to protecting the planet. This commitment aligns closely with global efforts led by the United Nations, particularly in advancing Sustainable Development Goals such as climate action and health and well-being.
In its early commemorations(2023), L.C.I.C.D embraced Earth Day under the theme “United for Change: A Day of Prayer and Environmental Action.” This approach brought together communities, faith-based organizations, and institutions in a shared space of unity. The focus was not only on environmental sustainability, but also on collective responsibility, leadership, and spiritual reflection for the future of Lesotho.
The organization’s activities included welcoming ceremonies, prayers, and addresses from various stakeholders, all aimed at encouraging individuals to reflect on their role in creating a more peaceful and sustainable society. Symbolic environmental actions were also incorporated, reinforcing the idea that change must be both spoken and practiced.
Building on this foundation, L.C.I.C.D successfully commemorated Earth Day on May 16th 2025 in a collaborative event that brought together key partners, including UNESCO, the Lesotho Defence Force, the Ministry of Environment, and several community organizations, media houses, and faith groups. This gathering marked more than just a celebration—it became a movement rooted in unity, peace, and environmental responsibility.
More recently(2026), the organization participated in a joint World Water Day (March 22) and Earth Day commemoration held on April 25th at Lerotholi Polytechnic Auditorium. Hosted by the Envirocare Club and Rotaract Club in partnership with WASCO, the event was held under the theme “Water Conservation and Environmental Sustainability.” It served as a reminder of the urgent need to protect water resources while strengthening environmental awareness among young people and communities.
Globally, both Earth Day and World Water Day emphasize practical action. Initiatives such as planting trees, organizing clean-up campaigns, promoting recycling, and starting composting projects are simple yet powerful ways to contribute to environmental protection. These actions highlight an important truth: sustainability begins with everyday choices.
As environmental challenges continue to grow, so does the responsibility to act. L.C.I.C.D remains committed to fostering awareness, encouraging collaboration, and driving meaningful change within communities.
Earth Day is not just a date—it is a call to action. And through unity, intention, and consistent effort, a better future for our planet is within reach.
